Syntax Terror – The Media Show  ☆

Email goes horribly astray when the new intern tries to help Weena with her... hamster problem. Lesson learned: You never know whose hands your message will fall into if you spell that address wrong. Even spell check can't save you.

Storyboard – Where Spam Comes From  ☆

This is the half-finished storyboard from the Where Spam Comes From episode. Once again, an episode that was going to rely heavily on specific camera angles for a good effect. (more…)

Lesson Resources – My Hotness Is Pastede On Yey!  ☆

A LOT of research went into this episode -- which means we have a lot of additional resources to provide you for your lesson plan! Greg Apodaca, a professional graphics artist/photo retoucher, maintains an album on his site which we used in our episode (the before/after shots of the girl in the bikini). Sites like …

One Year On: A Report  ☆

When The Media Show had been in production for about a year, AfterEd TV's managers asked me to write up a summary of the past year. This was what I wrote, covering production, publicity, and distribution. Note that our take on YouTube and deviantArt has changed in the year since. Look at the episodes before …

Lesson Resources: Introducing the Intern, Netiquette, What’s In A Flame  ☆

There are some unspoken rules of the Internet which ought to be spoken about more often. Our episodes about netiquette and chain mail try to explain why certain behaviors online which may seem harmless actually make using the Internet a lot more unpleasant for others. You may think chain letters are harmless fun -- who …

Lesson Resources – Hot Gossip  ☆

There was a sort of reverse psychology to the bad reviews Gossip Girl got, and the people promoting the show knew it. The article in that link talks about the ad campaign for the show which we showed in the episode. Initially, we wanted to include advertiser Martin Lindstrom's observations about how "realistic" details like …

Script – Red Shirt Revue  ☆

Here's two drafts from the Red Shirt Revue script. The first one has notes from Erin, the managing editor of the AfterEd channel. The second one is closer to what we actually said. Notice we didn't make too many changes. Why do you think we made the changes we did, and not the ones Erin …

Lost Episode – What Is A URL?  ☆

Sometimes we make videos which just don't cut it. Most bad scripts get caught at the scriptwriting stage, and we change them until they work, but sometimes we get done shooting an episode and realize it's just not as funny or informative as we thought. This happened with the What Is A URL episode -- …

Before and After: Snopes  ☆

There were a few videos we shot more than once. For instance, we made two versions of the Snopes Before You Send episode. We improvised the first version, without a script. It turned out ok, but we thought it was an important enough message that we decided to do it again, with a better script …

Production: Faking a webcam  ☆

One of the original ideas for the show was that Weena and Erna would be filming it on their webcam, at least part of the time. In a bunch of early episodes -- the pilot, early responses, Yell and Sell, Hot Gossip, and the first version of the Snopes video -- there are sections with …

Viral video: A “Muppet Bump”?  ☆

On November 23, 2009, MuppetsStudio, a YouTube channel associated with the Jim Henson puppetry studio, posted a music video set to the Queen song Bohemian Rhapsody. It was a viral success. Blogs linked to it, people passed it around via Facebook and Twitter, and it got millions of views (over 12 million by the time …

Whoops! – What’s In A Flame?  ☆

Sometimes when you're out on a shoot, things are chaotic and you mess something up in a way that's not easy to fix. Check out the outdoor and locker room scenes in the What's In A Flame? episode. They look kinda weird, right? But in a way that makes some sense: it maybe looks like …
